Kottayam

Kottayam has the unique distinction of becoming the first district in India to achieve 100% literacy. It is also called the land of latex,lakes,liquor and letters.This is due to the large number of rubber plantations and also many reputed national publishers like Malayala Manorama etc. It can be rightly called the educational capital of Kerala. The district also produces a wide variety of cash crops like vanilla,cardamom,clove etc. Kottayam is the first town in India selected by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India to be transformed as an Eco City.

Kottayam is well connected by road and rail.The nearest airport is at Kochi, 76 kms away from the city.

Get around

Getting around the city is easy with numerous autorickshaws available.However meters are not commonly used and it is advisable to negotiate the fare before boarding.However compared to other Indian cities like Chennai, Delhi& Bangalore, incidences of drivers cheating tourists or fleecing them are very rare. Tourist taxis although more expensive are a more reliable means of travelling longer distances in larger groups.
